Light is fundamental in the paintings of Nieves Fernández as a born and bred Mediterranean.  What moves her is the effects, moods and atmosphere that light creates, transforming the ordinary and the mundane into something unique: a face, an alley or a fruit.  She looks for the extraordinary in the ordinary and finds it through light.

There is a strong influence of Velázquez in her portraits, of Caravaggio in her still lifes, and of Beruete or Sorolla in her cityscapes. Although she is a plein air painter, she does not paint what she sees: she paints what she feels.
